The most important travel trends for 2022: insightful information from HomeToGo
January 24, 2022
HomeToGo, NextPax Channel Partner and one of the largest travel-marketplaces globally, has shared compelling information on current travel trends and predictions for 2022.
One of the most important findings is that travellers are scaling up their travel plans, compared to pre-pandemic numbers.
2021 numbers are quite outstanding, namely the length of stay and travel spend have increased, and are expected to increase even more so in the new year.
The vacation rentals marketplace; HomeToGo, has revealed the following captivating numbers:
- A global ~+54% increase in average booking value for vacation rental spending and longer trips
- a ~+9% increase in the average length of stay
One of the main reasons for the expected growth in 2022 is the increase in vaccinations globally. As more countries are lifting travel restrictions for vaccinated or tested people, more travel plans are being made. Bearing this in mind, together with the already growing numbers in both the length of stay and the average booking value, 2022 is considered to become an optimistic year for travel.

Top 3 types of trips for 2022
According to a global survey of 4000 travellers and search demand data from HomeToGo, there are three types of trips that can be entitled as clear winners for 2022. Relaxing on island beaches, safe trips to known places, and domestic stay-cations: discovering new gems in one’s own country, are said to be the most important trends for the coming year.
Trend #1: Prioritizing Relaxation and Private Escapes
A recent global consumer survey carried out by HomeToGo reveals that relaxation is the main motivator when it comes to making travel plans (63% of the participants). Moreover, it seems that destinations for relaxation-holidays are mostly islands. So, finding ones zen on (tropical) islands will be the hottest thing for 2022.
Bali (+611% search increase), Sanibel Island (+567%), and Saint Lucia (+560%) are taking the lead as the top three destinations.
Trend #2: Re-emergence of Touristic Regions
Choosing renown touristic places for travel destinations is regaining in popularity. Rural places were top destinations for 2021, but 2022 sees a re-emergence of touristic places. HomeToGo’s search results show that interest in some well-known tourist places did not only remain stable, but even increased in popularity. An enormous increase in destinations such as: Florida (+70.23% search increase), Sardinia in Italy (+57.40%), Majorca in Spain (+36.29%) and the German Baltic Sea (+23%), is pointing out the resurgence of these types of trips.
